About Mahjong

Mahjong (also known as Mahjongg or Mahj) is a rummy-like game that uses tiles instead of cards. Originating in China, it blends skill, strategy, and luck in perfect measure. American Mahjong was standardized in 1937 by the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL), a New York-based group that still dictates the official rules today. They release an updated card each spring, keeping the game fresh and competitive.

American Mahjong thrives because players across the country follow the same rules. This consistency means you can walk into any club or tournament anywhere and play seamlessly. Clear rules also prevent disputes, reduce confusion, keep the game moving smoothly, and ensure fair play for everyone at the table.

American vs. Chinese Mahjong

Two main versions exist. At Clink Mahjong Social, we play American Mahjong—think of it as a cousin to Rummy with the strategic depth of Chess. It's accessible enough to learn the basics in a session or two, satisfying enough to enjoy for a lifetime. Yes, there are tiles and rules to learn, but don't let that intimidate you. It's easier than it looks.

What You Need to Play

  • A mahjong set (152 tiles)
  • Three other players
  • A flat surface
  • Official NMJL card
  • Racks & two dice
  • Grace for yourself and a sense of humor

How the Game Works

  1. Setup: Tiles are shuffled. Each player builds a wall of 19 tiles (2 stacks high).
  2. Deal: Players draw 4 tiles at a time until everyone has 13 tiles (the dealer starts with 14).
  3. The Charleston: Before play begins, players pass 3 tiles at a time, back and forth, seven times. It's a fun ritual that keeps things unpredictable.
  4. Play: Players take turns drawing and discarding. Play moves right (counterclockwise); walls move left (clockwise).
  5. Goal: Build a winning hand by combining melds—singles, pairs, pungs, kongs, or quints.
  6. Winner: First to complete a valid hand calls "Mahjong!"

The Tiles Explained

Suited Tiles: Bamboo, Craks, and Dots (numbered 1-9 in each suit)

Honor Tiles: Winds (North, South, East, West) and Dragons (Red, Green, White)

Bonus Tiles: Flowers and Seasons (most modern sets use Flowers)
